Lobos look to keep momentum rolling entering regular season finale

Another piece of hardware arrived at the Lobo Den on Monday.

But that's not all the trophies the Lobos want to add to the case this season.

And for the 12-5A champion Lobos, the road to the postseason has one more stop this week in Rockwall as Longview – who picked up a season-high five votes in the newest release of the AP high school football poll on Monday – looks to complete a sweep of the district on the road.

With eight straight wins, momentum is big this week for Longview in the regular season finale. Longview leads the district with 260 points scored while yielding 86 in district action.

"Playing well going into the playoffs is very important and that's something that we're going to try to do," Longview head coach John King said. "It's been a long regular season and we've improved from non-district into district and we want to continue that into the postseason."

While they have a lock on the Division II top seed, King hopes the focus stays on the task at hand this week.

"It's going to be a little tougher than normal keeping the focus this week," he said. "They can read, they can see the standings and they know where we're headed and what the plan is. I think our kids will settle down, have a good week of practice and be ready to play on Friday."

Such is not the case on the opposing sideline.

"Their (Rockwall) playoff hopes are on the line," King said. "They know if they can knock us off on Friday and win, then they're in. If not, there hopes lie elsewhere. I know Coach Rodney Webb well enough to know that he's going to have them ready to play."

Junior Chris Warren leads the Yellowjackets on the ground with 747 yards on 108 carries with 11 touchdowns followed by sophomore Tamba Juanah with 641 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Junior wide receiver Xavier Castille leads 12-5A with 992 yards on 62 catches for 11 touchdowns. Will Reed has completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,843 yards and 17 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

"Offensively, they give you a lot of looks," King said. "Castille is probably one of the better players in the district and they get the ball to him a lot of different ways. They've got a young quarterback that does a good job of throwing the ball and executing the offense.

"Defensively, they're out of the 4-2-5 and give a lot of looks. They've played some good football teams and have slowed them down and they've had trouble slowing some others down."

Longview running back JaMycal Hasty – who hasn't played in the Lobos' past two contests – fully participated in practice on Monday. His status for Friday is questionable.
