CENTER – The eventful week for the Pine Tree Pirates continued on Friday night.
A day after finding out head coach Derek Fitzhenry had been placed on administrative leave, the Pirates were in an almost four-hour contest with the Center Roughriders that included a total of 113 points scored, three ejections and a 30-minute lightning delay.
Senior quarterback Dalvin Manns accounted for a combined 521 yards and seven touchdowns to lead Pine Tree to a 64-49 victory, starting a season 2-0 for the first time since 2007.
The victory also ended a 16-game road losing streak for Pine Tree.
After forcing a turnover on Center's second play of the game – a fumble recovery by Jeremy Walters – Pine Tree moved the ball down the field with quick passes, and Manns finished the drive with a 1-yard run for a 7-0 Pirate lad.
Center quickly answered less than a minute later with a 46-yard run from Dejalen Preston to tie the game at 7-7.
More than six minutes went off the clock before the next scoring play, a rarity in the first half. Manns gave the Pirates a 14-7 advantage with a 2-yard run after he hit Jonathan Giddings for a 63-yard pickup.
After the kickoff, Center needed just one play to tie the game at 14 with an 83-yard scamper by Delvin Whitaker.
The teams once again exchanged touchdowns early in the second quarter – a 9-yard pass from Manns to Doug Morgan for Pine Tree and a 51-yard strike from Dalton Horton to Josh Burns. Following a block of the extra point by Pine Tree's Irving Shen to help the Pirates cling to a 21-20 lead, lightning forced a 30-minute delay.
After the delay, Center took its first and only lead of the game with a 3-yard run from Delvin Whitaker to make it 26-21.
Pine Tree scored two more times in the first half, a 65-yard pass from Manns to Mason Hays and an 8-yard run from Manns to take a 36-26 lead into the locker room.
Manns completed 24 of 42 passes for 481 yards. Hays caught eight passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, and Morgan had 12 receptions for 144 yards and a score.
Pine Tree had 597 total yards, and Center (0-2) had 686.
The Pirates forced six turnovers, including two fumble recoveries by Jeremy Walters and a 50-yard interception return from Dakota Lynn.
