Longview and Jefferson will head into their respective bye weeks on a winning note, thanks in large part to the play of Lobo quarterback Dezmond Chumley and Bulldog linebacker Chris Smith.

Chumley (offense) and Smith (defense) have been named Players of the Week for their performances.

Longview opened District 12-5A play with a 69-17 win over Mesquite, improving to 4-1 overall. Chumley continued his torrid play of late, completing 11 of 16 passes for 230 yards and five touchdowns against the Skeeters.

In the past two games, Chumley has completed 23 of 34 passes for 435 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions. For the season, the Lobo standout is 51 of 88 for 902 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Longview has a bye this week and will return to action on Oct. 11 at Rockwall Heath.

Smith has been a tackling machine the past two seasons at Jefferson, and is on a pace to shatter last year's mark of 132 tackles.

In an 18-13 win over Pleasant Grove on Friday, Smith racked up 25 tackles, three tackles for losses, a sack and three quarterback pressures.

After recording 87 tackles as a sophomore in 2011, Smith had 132 tackles, 24 tackles for losses and five sacks in 2012. In five games this season, he has 81 tackles, 12 tackles for losses, three forced fumbles, two sacks, six QB pressures and three passes defended.

Jefferson (3-2) is idle Friday and will host Troup in the District 9-2A Division I opener on Oct. 11.
