The Upshur County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide that officials said Friday occurred nearly two weeks ago in the Simpsonville area.
Lt. Matt Alford said the Upshur County Sheriff's Office received a call about a week ago about a residential structure fire on Woodchuck Road in Pct. 4, the northwestern portion of the county. Several volunteer fire departments also responded to the fire, he said.
"As they were battling flames, they discovered the body of a black woman, later identified as Erica Cook, in the yard," Alford said.
Cook's body was sent to Forensic Medical of Texas in Tyler for an autopsy, he said.
The autopsy ruled the 32-year-old woman's death as a homicide, Alford said.
He would not disclose the manner of death.
No arrests have been made in the case, and Alford said it remains under investigation.
He declined to say whether the sheriff's office has any suspects at this time.
