Laneville loses to Water Valley, 68-44

AUSTIN – Water Valley placed four players in double figures on the way to a 68-44 rout of Laneville in the Class A, Division II championship game Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
Trae Hannon led the Wildcats (29-5) with 16 points, but it was the play of point guard Connor Copley that put Water Valley over the top.
Copley accounted for seven of Water Valley's first eight field goals to help the Wildcats jump out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Copley finished with nine points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and three steals.
After Laneville cut the score to 17-13 early in the second quarter, Copley knocked down a three-pointer.
Laneville kept the game close in the first half and trailed just 30-25 at the break.
Water Valley opened the third quarter on a 15-4 to stretch the lead to double digits and kept it that way for the remainder of the contest, leading 55-37 after the third quarter and holding Laneville to just seven points in the fourth.
Kendrick Anderson led Laneville (33-7) with 13 points, and Tralon Alexander added 10 points. Donta Harris, who scored 30 points in the 55-54 semifinal win over Miller Grove, was held to just nine points and was 1 of 5 on three-pointers.
Kellan Kirkland had 14 points, and Brock Demere and freshman Cameron Copley each had 13 points for Water Valley, which won its first state title.
