Police found a man shot to death late Friday in this home on 12th Street in Longview. It’s the first homicide in the city in 2016.

Longview police say one man was killed in a shooting late Friday.

Officers were dispatched at 11:53 p.m. to a residence in the 1600 block of 12th Street. When they arrived, they found Tony Bernard Nelson, 20, dead inside the home.

A resident who lives near the home said officers have not kept up their increased presence in the South Longview neighborhood.

“When (all the homicides) started last year, (police) did all that patrolling and made their presence felt for a little while, but then things died down and they stopped patrolling here and went over to (another) area,” said Marcus Runnels, 29. “I feel like everything picked up when (police) stopped patrolling because criminals feel like they can relax and keep doing what they were doing in the beginning.”

Last year, Longview recorded the most homicides — 14 — in at least a decade. Nelson’s death is the first homicide of 2016.

“I think (police) need to get some help down here, some U.S. marshals or some Texas Rangers because there’s a lot going on,” Runnels said.

Police have not identified suspects, and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Longview Police Department at (903) 237-1170.

Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Gregg County Crimestoppers at (903) 236-7867.
