Nov. 5, 2016 at 10:55 p.m.
My name is: Debbie Jackson
I volunteer at: Newgate Mission
I have volunteered there since: I just became involved with the Christmas bazaar.
My duties there include: Sorting and creating displays
The people who benefit from this are: Our entire community benefits when we enable others to live independently and at a higher standard. There is such a need for assistance for displaced families who live in our community, but by the grace of God, most of us could be facing similar situations in our own lives (unemployment, homelessness, abuse, hunger, etc.).
I also volunteer at: Longview Interfaith Hospitality Network, Meals on Wheels, Greggton United Methodist Church and Literacy Army through Pine Tree Elementary School
My hometown is: Dallas
I live in: Longview
I have lived there since: 1972
I work at: I retired from Pine Tree ISD as a classroom teacher.
My hobbies include: Cooking, yard work, reading and community outreach
My family members are: Husband, Jimmy, of 47 years; daughter Amy; and son Matthew and his wife., Emily
I would encourage people to volunteer because: We all have talents and energy that can help improve the quality of life for others.
Upcoming activities: The Newgate Christmas Store is a huge Christmas bazaar with great bargains, a tremendous selection and unbelievable prices. The store is located in the former Johnny Cace's Seafood & Steak House at 1501 E. Marshall Ave. in Longview. It is open from noon to 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
