Longview will be represented in 20 events today as the District 11-6A and 12-6A area meet gets going at Mesquite's Hanby Stadium.

If the showing from the Lobos and Lady Lobos, as well as the entire 11-6A contingent, at the district meet is any indication, Longview head track coach Casey Pearce expects a high-flying day.

"We've got a great chance to get through, everyone is running well," Pearce said. "We've been consistent and everyone has a lot of life in their legs.

"At the district meet, everyone was moving, not just us. It was very impressive. If there's a better area meet, I'd like to see it."

FULL LIST OF AREA QUALIFIERS

For the Lady Lobos, Victoria Pierson will be competing in four events, including the 4x100 relay, the 4x200 relay, the 4x400 relay and the long jump. Three more Lady Lobos -- Deja Moore, Tyetiana Rugley and Daijia Carr -- are heading to three events.

The 4x400 team of Moore, Carr, Pierson and Rugley boast an event best time of 3:51.37 by five seconds among the qualifiers from the district level.

Moore is second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.34 behind Rockwall-Heath's Morgan Burks-Magee, who won the 11-6A meet with a 23.91 time. Pierson is third among the qualifiers with a 24.75 time.

With the school year winding down, Pearce noted the commitment of four seniors, Daajman Taylor, KeUndre Wilson, Chris Taylor and Astin Henry, all football players.

"Their high school careers are coming to an end and it would be easy to check out and just graduate," Pearce said. "They've shown a great commitment and work ethic on the track. They're running in the moment and I'm proud of them."

All four will compete in two events, along with three other Lobos competing in multiple events. Henry enters with the best time in the high jump with a mark of 6-5.

"I feel like we'll be in the mix," Pearce said. "We've just got to go do what we do."

The Class 6A, Region II meet is set for April 28-29 at Baylor's Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium in Waco.

Also this track season, Longview merged all three middle schools into one team for the first time with a positive result.

"That was really good for us," Pearce said. "We believe it will help participation at the high school level and it shows them that they are a big part of the high school program."

The Lobo JV boys notched a first-place finish and the JV girls finished third at the 11-6A meet.
