Sabine player earns Class 3A Defensive Player of the Year honors

Sabine junior linebacker Kobe Renfro, who racked up nearly 200 tackles in 10 games, has been named Defensive Player of the Year on the Class 3A Texas Associated Press Sports Editors All-State Football Team.
DeKalb senior running back JaQuan Jackson was named the 3A Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 2,867 yards and scoring 48 touchdowns.
Renfro recorded 191 tackles, four sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 20 tackles for loss and two pass breakups.
Selections were based on regular season statistics only.
First team all-state selections from East Texas were New Diana receiver T.J. Rogers, New Diana quarterback Jackson Sampson, Beckville kicker Carlos Campos, Jefferson defensive linemen Eric Gipson and Taylor Smith, White Oak defensive lineman Elijah Trest and Arp defensive back DeMarvion Overshown.
Earning second team honors were Daingerfield offensive lineman A.J. Carroll, Elysian Fields receiver Cole Myers, Harmony running back Barrett Hill, West Rusk defensive lineman Darrien Johnson, West Rusk linebacker Tyree Wilson, Beckville defensive back Stephen Darden, Jefferson defensive back Kepha Luster and New Diana punter Cody Payton.
Honorable mention selections were offensive linemen Matt Brunson of New Diana, Conner Henson of Harmony, Harrison Reagan of Hughes Springs and Braley Varnell of Jefferson, quarterback Heath Hood of White Oak, running back Jaylon Garland of West Rusk, defensive lineman Hunter Brabham of Hughes Springs, linebackers Easton Blackstone of Harmony and Diego Molina of West Rusk and defensive backs Konrad Eichelman of Harmony and Reggie Jeter of Daingerfield.
On Sunday, Linden-Kildare linebacker Ty Patterson was named the Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year, and Bells quarterback Bryan Ponder earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades.
Patterson recorded 183 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 10 forced fumbles, five fumble reoveries, two interceptions, three sacks and two blocked kicks. Ponder completed 270 of 374 passes for 3,696 yards, 47 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
East Texas players earning first team all-state honors were Linden-Kildare running back LaDavion Johnson, Alto defensive lineman Ra’Dedrick Woodson, Patterson at linebacker and San Augustine defensive back Ced Thomas.
Second team picks were Tenaha offensive lineman Matthew Flournoy, Big Sandy running back Seth Burk, Tenaha running back Onterio Thompson and Carlisle defensive back Max Jackson.
Earning honorable mention status were receivers Trai Gardner of Tenaha and Jay Price of Carlisle, quarterback C.J. Horn of Tenaha, running backs Khameron Pippins of Big Sandy and Fred Thacker of Alto, defensive linemen J.D. Kessler of Union Grove and Jaurmez Brock of Tenaha, linebackers Walker Adams of Carlisle and Tavoris Giles of Tenaha and defensive backs Jacob Owen of Linden-Kildare and Gerald Turner of Carlisle.
