Spring Hill's Barcenas a double honoree on 4A all-state team

Spring Hill’s Efren Barcenas was a double honoree on Tuesday with the release of the Class 4A Texas Associated Press Sports Editors All-State Football Team, earning first team honors as a punter and honorable mention status as a kicker.

Barcenas was the lone East Texas player to earn first team accolades, but four area players were second team selections and 24 made the honorable mention list.

Selections were based on regular season statistics only.

Barcenas, a junior, averaged 45 yards on 19 punts this season with a long of 64 yards. He placed three of his punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

As a kicker, he was 61-of-65 on extra point attempts, 3-of-4 on field goal attempts with a long of 35 yards and he had 10 touchbacks on his kickoffs.

Wichita Falls Hirschi junior running back Daimarqua Foster was the Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year, and Argyle junior defensive lineman Chase Petter was the Defensive Player of the Year. Foster carried 179 times for 2,483 yards and scored 34 touchdowns, and Petter recorded 92 tackles, 13 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram, Kilgore defensive lineman Demorrea Richardson, Carthage linebacker Mykel Gates and Henderson defensive back Tyrek Blanton were second team picks.

Earning honorable mention status on offense were linemen Austin Adams of Kilgore, Tanner Cornellof Spring Hill, Colin Keller and Andrew Williams of Gladewater, Jesse Wayne Pierce of Carthage and Slade Whitson of Pittsburg, receiver Dee Bowens of Carthage, quarterbacks Aaron “Poppy” Brown of Gilmer, Gunner Capps of Carthage and Decorian Phillips of Liberty-Eylau and running backs Kiante Stoker of Spring Hill and Briant Mumphrey of Kilgore.

Defensive honorable mention picks were linebackers De’Braylon Garrett of Henderson and Jake Kellam of Van, linebackers Vaughn Bufkin of Spring Hill, Ahmad Brown of Carthage and Garrett Lybrand and Brady Odom of Henderson and defensive backs Nesba Brown of Kilgore, Mekhi Colbert and Jacorey Ware of Carthage, Keithlen Griffin of Pittsburg and Brandon Smith of Wills Point.
