Reid Lewis, a senior at Hallsville High School, Monday, will join the Genesis Drum & Bugle Corps marching band as a trumpeter.

Hallsville High School senior Reid Lewis and his friends watched members of a Drum Corps International team perform over the summer.

They were awed. The elite marching bands compete and perform all over the world. And in spring, Lewis is going to join their ranks as a trumpeter in Genesis Drum & Bugle Corps, a Drum Corps International team in Austin.

"It's just really great," Lewis said.

Drum Corps International began more than four decades ago to bring marching performances and competitions to the general public. Team ensembles are made up of drums, percussion and brass instruments such as trumpets, tubas and baritones.

Lewis, as a member on the Genesis team, will spend one weekend out of every month training. Once June arrives, he'll move to Austin for spring training and then begin performing with the team around the country. The Genesis team is in its second year at the world-class level within Drum Corps International, officials said.

"They really want to make finals this year, and we're going to work really hard," Lewis said. "We're going to do that."

Lewis plays trumpet and percussion instruments, after he decided his junior year that he wanted to join the bass line within the Hallsville High School Bobcat Band. But he's focused his efforts on trumpet this year.

Lewis went through several auditions in Dallas to make the Genesis team. He'll be traveling with the team next year and beginning music studies at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Lewis said music is his passion.

"When playing music — your audience can get involved with the music by their emotions. I love that," he said.

Hallsville ISD Band Director Sherri Morgan, in highlighting Lewis' accomplishments at the Dec. 19 school board meeting, told trustees this was not a typical situation. Most of the people performing with Drum Corps International are college juniors and seniors.

"He's in for a real treat. ... We are very, very proud of him," Morgan said. "The first student ever from Hallsville High School to accomplish this."
