New Year, New You: Four Ways to Feel Great in 2017

For many of us, we are a few days into keeping our New Year’s resolutions that we made. If you’re like us, many of these resolutions probably focused on goals like losing weight and the like, but refocusing on total body care is the way to go for long-lasting health that keeps your mind and body tuned up. As you continue to define what total body care means for you, use the following tips to create a healthy process for this year and to treat your entire body with all of the care it deserves.

1. Eat Healthy

We all talk a good game about eating better, but all too often we fail to follow through with any action. Here are some things to keep in mind when trying to develop better eating habits.

  • Plan your meals in advance.
  • Eat regular meals to prevent overeating.
  • If you eat a snack, treat it like a mini-meal and include complex carbohydrates and a small amount of protein and fat.
  • Eat slowly, and chew every bite.
  • Don’t eat after dinner—try brushing your teeth to resist the temptation to eat again.

2. Exercise

If working out sounds like an annoying chore but one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get in shape, here’s a list of 5 familiar moves that take little preparation and motivation. Equipment-free and oh so simple, this 8-minute routine is bound to get anyone up off the couch. You could even do it in front of the TV!

To tone your muscles, practice this quick routine 3-4 times a week.

  • Arm circles - To firm and strengthen your shoulders, chest, and back
  • Knee lifts - To target your hips and thighs
  • Step and tap - To get your heart pumping.
  • Calf raises - To strengthen your calves.
  • Standing crunches. - To target and strengthen your oblique ab muscles.

3. Reduce Stress

The Statistic Brain Research Institute reports that 77% of people regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress. It’s inevitable that stress will rear its ugly head in our lives and practicing total body care means finding healthy ways to cope with it.

A single massage session, while relaxing and enjoyable, can also lower your heart rate, relax your muscles and reduce the physical expressions of stress in the body. Also, a quick walk can do wonders for clearing your head and coping with stress. Talking to a trusted friend, counselor or doctor helps when you need to open up about situations that stress you.

4. Don’t Skimp on Skincare

Though it’s not thought of as an organ like a heart or kidneys, the fact is that skinisconsidered an organ and is our body’s largest organ. And that’s why it’s so important to pay critical attention to it, especially the skin on your face.
