Late 3-pointer in overtime beats Lobos

Rockwall-Heath claimed its first lead of the night on its first attempt from deep.

Thirty 3-point attempts later, spanning 3:57 into overtime, the Hawks dropped a final dagger on the Lobos.

Trailing 60-59, Garrett Walker capped a 24-second possession with a deep corner three with three seconds left to lift Rockwall-Heath to a 62-60 overtime win over Longview in District 11-6A action at Lobo Coliseum.

Big numbers highlighted the scrappy first meeting between the two teams with the Hawks dropping 11 threes on 31 attempts. Meanwhile Longview, which led by seven entering the fourth quarter, went 16-for-28 from free-throw range.

After going 2-for-14 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Hawks finished 9-for-17 the rest of the way with Walker's seventh three in the second half and overtime providing the back-breaker. He finished with 21 points.

Heath (12-7, 2-2) held a 27-26 advantage on rebounds over Longview (10-11, 1-3), who committed one more turnover, 16-15, than the visitors.

Both teams finished with a 50 percent mark from the floor. Longview went 6-for-16 from three-point range.

Jaylin Brown led three Lobos in double digits with 14 points, including 8-for-8 from the stripe. He sank a pair with 56 seconds to give Longview a 60-59 lead.

Jason Bush and Kyle Shields followed with 12 points. Kaland Johnson had eight points and six assists, adding five rebounds along with Bush and Jaiden Smith, who also chipped in eight for Longview. The Lobos led by as many as nine in the third quarter.

Heath's Kolton Pruitt led all scorers with 22 points and the 6-6 junior pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

After an early 7-7 tie, Longview built a 23-15 lead with 2:20 left in the first half. Pruitt finished on a 4-0 run to trim Longview's lead to four points at halftime.

After a third-quarter opening three from Bush off a dish from Johnson, Pruitt had a three-point play, a putback and a runner down the baseline for a 28-25 lead.

Shields then connected on back-to-back threes for the Lobos, getting assists from down low from Johnson and Montavian Reed for a game-high nine-point lead.

Walker had two threes for the Hawks but a three-point play from Brown put Longview up 40-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lobos committed three turnovers inside the opening two minutes of the fourth before Walker drained threes No. 3 and 4. Another shot from deep from Heath's CJ Williams gave the Hawks its first lead since the opening minutes, 44-42, with 3:56 left in regulation.

Heath's fifth three of the fourth pushed the Hawks' lead to 53-48 with 1:39 left.

Johnson trimmed it to one point off a steal and wide-open layup before Pruitt ran the floor off a defensive rebound.

Smith took a dish from Johnson and sophomore Cameron Starling connected on a free throw with 56 seconds showing for a 55-55 tie that forced an extra four minutes.

Possession was the name for both teams in the overtime period with Longview holding the ball for 1:17 before misfiring on a three.

Walker drained his sixth three of the night and was immediately answered by one from Shields off an assist from Johnson for a 58-58 tie with 1:11 left.

Pruitt made a free throw before two from Brown put Longview ahead, 60-59.

A jump ball went to the Hawks with 27 seconds left and the Lobo defense stymied 24 seconds of the Hawks' offense before Walker hit a three from the corner with three seconds left to cap Heath's comeback win.

Elsewhere in District 11-6A, Mesquite Horn took a 69-46 win over John Tyler to propel the Jaguars sole possession of first at 4-0.

Rockwall topped Mesquite, 54-45, to move both teams to 3-1. Heath sits at 2-2 while North Mesquite, Longview, John Tyler and Tyler Lee, a 77-58 winner over North Mesquite, sit at 1-3.

Longview visits Mesquite on Friday.
