A pedestrian hit-and-run near Liberty City left a Kilgore man dead and an Overton man jailed.

Lechell Scott, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck Tuesday night on CR 3652 — also known as Green Blackmon Road — about 5 miles south of Liberty City, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Staff Sgt. Jean Dark.

Scott was walking north on the road when he was struck by a car driven by 37-year-old Michael Lydall Grant, troopers said.

Grant was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of CR 3652 and CR 3615, troopers indicated in their preliminary crash records.

Grant had fled the scene when officers arrived shortly after 9:22 p.m. Tuesday, but a Gregg County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit found him.

“His speech was slurred, he could not hold his head up and he stated he took numerous medications,” an arresting officer wrote in a report. “At the hospital, I asked Grant if he thought his medication was a contributing factor in the crash, and he stated, ‘I think it had a lot to do with it.’ ”

Grant agreed to provide a blood specimen before he was booked into the Gregg County Jail, where he remained Wednesday on $110,000 bond, charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and accident involving death.

In May 2015, Grant was sentenced to five years in prison for felony drug possession in Gregg County. That sentence runs concurrent with a prison sentence he also incurred in Rusk County, according to court records.

Scott’s body was transported to Cunningham Funeral Home in Kilgore.
