Jefferson's 29th annual Mardi Gras Upriver kicks off Feb. 9 with live music, multiple parades and other activities all based around this year's theme of Literary Treasures.

Festivities continue through the afternoon of Feb. 11, with thousands of people expected to flock to Jefferson for the weekend's activities.

"We have a parade each day, with the walking parade on Friday, the grand parade on Saturday and the children's parade on Sunday," said Amanda Turner, Krewe of Hebe vice president. The Krewe of Hebe organizes Mardi Gras Upriver and other events each year.

The weekend will feature bands and live entertainment, craft and art vendors, and deals and events at Jefferson's downtown shops and stores.

"Mardi Gras Upriver began 29 years ago as a way to draw in tourists to support the town's businesses and bed and breakfasts during the slower winter months," Turner said. "This event has now turned into one of Jefferson's major events."

Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras 2018, is officially recognized Feb. 13. Jefferson's Mardi Gras Upriver always hosts its weekend festivities the weekend before Fat Tuesday.
