Letters on Trump's military parade, Congressional candidates, Jerusalem

Feb. 10, 2018 at 11:32 p.m.

'Only a man'

In ancient Rome, as the victorious general paraded triumphantly through the streets to the cheers and adulation of the people, a slave would ride in or beside the great man's chariot and whisper in his ear, "Remember, you are only a man."

Mr. President, you have refused to reveal your income tax return. You are considering refusing to be interviewed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, or submit to a subpoena. You are entertaining the notion of issuing pardons to self and staff. You attach ridiculing monikers to your political opponents, labeling them (among other things) treasonous for not applauding you sufficiently.

Now as you plan your grand military parade, please consider doing this; Have an aide walk beside or behind you and continuously whisper in your ear the words of former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, "The only title in our democracy superior to that of president is the title of citizen."

Timothy Higgins, Diana

How about the others?

I read an article in your paper about Brent Beal (Monday) and would like to know if we can get the same type of information and coverage on the other candidates.

Felita Ewins, Carthage

Editor's note: Since mid-December, the News-Journal has been attempting to set meetings with Beal's primary opponent Shirley McKellar and with U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, the Republican incumbent the two Democrats hope to challenge. As of Friday, no meetings had been set with either Gohmert or McKellar. Though we would prefer to speak with them, we will prepare stories on all candidates before early voting begins Feb. 20.

It's not politics

You are blessed because you can read, especially, the Holy Bible. Some schools graduate illiterates for the sake of "political correctness," which is self-inflicted sanity.

Abram was a pagan, a Chaldean. God found many pagan people who were obedient to Him and Abram was one. God changed Abram's name to Abraham by adding the letter "h" to his name. That letter is the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and five is the number of grace. God's grace was on Abram because of his obedience.

Yes, Abram had two sons. Isaac's descendants are the Israelites. Ishmael's descendants are Arabs. God's covenant is with Abram and his people. God loves Arabs and wants them saved. Jesus is the only path to salvation. God made Abraham the father of many nations by changing his name.

God's covenant is with Abraham and his seed, the Jewish people. The Jews are God's chosen people and Israel is the land He chose for them. God set His name in Jerusalem forever.

What is your problem with that, if you're a Christian? President Trump blessed Israel when he recognized Jerusalem as its capital city.

Dump the politics, it is spiritual! Look up. Our redemption draws near!
