KILGORE — A Kilgore woman shot to death on New Year's Eve was remembered Tuesday as a devoted mother and grandmother who had recently moved back to the area to be closer to family.

Tracy Lynn Reedy, 50, died after being shot several times, Kilgore police said.

"She was a nice person," said April Dupree, one of Reedy's neighbors. "She was a feisty person, but she was a nice person. Personality-wise, she was a genuinely nice person."

Kilgore police were called to a reported shooting about 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the Village on Meadowgreen Drive apartments. Police said officers found Reedy dead on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds.

A suspect fled before officers arrived. No arrest had been announced in the case by Tuesday evening, and police had not released further details on the shooting.

"The criminal investigation unit is actively investigating and additional information will be released when discovered," Kilgore police Assistant Chief Roman Roberson said in a statement early Monday.

Dupree, who lived near Reedy for about two months, said the victim recently had moved back to the area from Chicago to help with her family.

She had children and grandchildren whom she loved, Dupree said, and a grandson had been staying with her the day of the shooting.

"She was really devoted," the neighbor said. "I don't see a reason why nobody would want to kill her."

Reedy's death was the second homicide in Kilgore in 2017, after a fatal stabbing on Leake Street in early April. In that incident, Kilgore police said Juan C. Vazquez Perales, 27, argued with his estranged wife before dragging her into a house and stabbing her. Maria Carolina Alveraz Pantoja, 24, died at the scene.

Police said Perales cut himself in the neck and wrist and stabbed himself in the torso. He died two weeks later in a hospital.

The homicides were the first in the city since 2014.

Police are asking anyone with information about Reedy's death to contact Detective John Rowe at (903) 218-6906. Anonymous tips can also be made through the Kilgore Police Department's website, Facebook page or tip411.

Gregg County Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting. Tips can be made to (903) 236-7867.
