Two East Texans named to prison education panel

Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday named two East Texans to a five-member panel charged by lawmakers with enhancing education among inmate students in the state prison system.
Mike Bell of Henderson will chair the Task Force on Academic Credit and Industry Recognition, which was created by the 2017 Legislature to identify academic credit and industrial recognition for offenders within the Windham School at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Bell is vice president of correction at Management and Training Corp., a private prison company that operates Bradshaw State Jail in Rusk County.
He also is a former captain in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Bell will be joined on the panel by Sam Hurley of Athens. Hurley is associate vice president of the correctional education division and administrator of the prison education division at Trinity Valley Community College.
