A 31-year-old Tyler man was arrested Monday and charged in the death of Roberto Carlos Bermejo Hernandez, 14, of Tyler, who died after being struck by a bass boat while he was swimming at Lake Palestine on Sunday evening.
Jeffrey Joe Hampton was arrested by Texas Parks and Wildlife officials and booked into the Smith County Jail shortly after 6 a.m., according to Smith County Jail records.
He has been charged with manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid after bodily injury and was being held Monday on $850,000 in bonds, according to jail records.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said the boat that struck the teen left the scene before law enforcement arrived. The death occurred at Lakeway Harbor off Texas 155, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Tyler ISD said Hernandez had been a Moore Middle School student.
