GILMER — Gilmer ISD trustees gathered Monday before a regular school board meeting to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Gilmer High School.

The 129,000-square-foot, two-story high school was approved by voters as part of a $35.25 million bond package in May 2018 and is scheduled to be ready for students by the 2020-21 school year.

Passed by a 1,428-to-1,144 margin, the bond was the first successful effort by Gilmer ISD after seven failed attempts since 1978. A 22,000-square-foot career and technology center also was included in the bond.
