Longview ISD 'can't confirm' Longview HS alum/actor McConaughey as Friday commencement speaker

Actor and Longview High School graduate Matthew McConaughey addresses the Longview Lobo football team at the Texas State Capitol on Wednesday in Austin. The high school principal announced to seniors at graduation practice Thursday that McConaughey would give the commencement address Friday night, but a district spokeswoman said she could not confirm the statement.

Longview ISD is not confirming if actor and Longview High School graduate Matthew McConaughey will be speaking at Friday's high school graduation, district spokesperson Elizabeth Ross said.

"We want this to be about the kids and the families graduating," she said. "If he is there, we will welcome it with open arms, but we can’t confirm he will be there."

On Thursday, stories from TV stations such as Fox San Antonio and KRIS TV in Corpus Christi said television station KETK reported McConaughey as the speaker at graduation after Principal James Brewer made an announcement.

The story was removed from KETK's website by Thursday afternoon.

Ross confirmed that seniors at graduation practice Thursday morning were told about McConaughey's appearance.

Longview High School's graduation is slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lobo Stadium. The valedictorian is Nitin Rangu, and the salutatorian is Ejehi Ihionkhan.
