The Old Jail is seen in Carthage. The building has received a new state antiquities landmark designation.

The Panola County Historical Commission will unveil a new state antiquities landmark medallion at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Old Jail in Carthage.

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, will serve as keynote speaker for the ceremony, which will take place in front of the historical site at 213 N. Shelby St. in downtown Carthage.

The designation was made by the Texas Historical Commission. In order to qualify, the building had to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

This designation will provide more protection for the building under the Antiquities Code of Texas, according to the Panola County Historical Commission. Panola County will now have two sites with this designation: the International Boundary in Deadwood and the Old Jail.

The two-story Old Jail served as the county jail from 1891-1953.
