TYLER — The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary findings from an autopsy conducted on 3-year-old Madison Williams show the cause of death was drowning.

The New Chapel Hill girl was found dead Sunday afternoon in a pond behind her family’s home.

Madison had wandered away from her grandmother’s house and was found by divers in the family pond, according to a report from Justice of the Peace James Meredith’s office.

No injuries were seen on the body at the time, the report said.

Her mother had reported her missing Sunday morning. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area around 10 a.m., and an all-day search ensued.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.
