CARTHAGE — A Beckville man who police say punched a man in the face and robbed him after the victim had stopped to try to help whom he thought was a driver in need has been indicted by a Panola County grand jury.
James Kapaakea Jinks is charged with aggravated robbery in the March 18 incident near Deadwood. His bond was set at $50,000, and jail records show he was released April 12.
Deputies were called about 9:15 p.m. that day to the UT Health Carthage emergency room, Panola County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John DePresca said at the time.
A man reported that about two hours earlier, he had been driving on CR 463 when he saw a vehicle on the side of the road.
The victim told deputies he had asked the man at the car if everything was OK, and the man told the victim he had lost his phone. The man asked if he could borrow the victim’s phone, DePresca said.
The victim told deputies when he looked down at his phone, the man punched him in the face and temporarily knocked him unconscious. The victim told deputies he woke up to find between $650 and $700 gone from his pockets.
DePresca said the sheriff’s office provided a photo lineup to the victim, who identified Jinks as the man who assaulted him.
Jinks previously had been arrested on unrelated charges, DePresca said, and was still in jail at the time. He was arrested March 22 on the aggravated robbery charge.
