CARTHAGE — A 20-year-old DeBerry man has been charged with the murder of a Waskom man after a Thursday afternoon shooting also left another person injured.

Tramaine Eugene Butler was arrested Thursday and charged with murder after the death of Keileon Johnson, 22, of Waskom, the Panola County Sheriff’s Office said. Butler was being held Friday on $100,000 bond in the Panola County Detention Center.

The sheriff’s office received multiple 911 calls about 5 p.m. Thursday reporting a shooting on County Road 3151 in DeBerry, officials said.

One caller said at least one person was shot during an argument and that the shooter was still on the scene with what appeared to be a rifle, officials said.

As deputies were on their way, they were told the victim was being taken to the hospital in a private vehicle, officials said.

As the driver of the vehicle left the scene, the driver saw an Inter Community Fire Department vehicle on U.S. 79 coming in response and flagged it down, officials said. The firefighter discovered two shooting victims, one of whom had received multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and the other who had one gunshot to the hand.

Firefighters conducted life-saving measures on the more seriously injured victim, identified as Johnson, officials said. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by Panola County Justice of the Peace Toni Hughes, while the victim with the hand wound was taken to the hospital by EMS, the sheriff’s office said.

Meanwhile, deputies and investigators arrived at the shooting scene, where they met with Butler and later placed him in custody, officials said.

Johnson’s body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy, the sheriff’s office said.
