A Longview businessman was shot and killed Monday at a home on Tryon Road just outside the Longview city limits.
Gregg County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Joshua Tubb said Ron Horaney was killed in the shooting at about 7 p.m. Monday in the 4100 block of Tryon Road. He was pronounced dead at a Longview hospital.
Horaney was co-owner of Horaney’s Feed Store in downtown Longview with his mother, Betty.
Tubb said several patrol cars as well as the Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Unit were at the scene Monday evening.
William Hutcheson, who said he lives on Beaty Drive, across the street from the Tryon Road property where the shooting happened, was outside about 7 p.m. Monday when he heard “two rapid shots followed by a third.”
He said soon after he heard the three gunshots, he heard screams of “Oh, no.”
“I thought it was behind the house,” he said of the gunshots.
Hutcheson said Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers arrived less than 10 minutes after the shots and before Gregg County sheriff’s deputies arrived.
Horaney’s is one of Longview’s oldest continuously operated family businesses.
The store was founded in 1940 by Harry Horaney at 207 N. Court St.
The business moved to 301 W. Methvin St. in 1993. Court Street was renamed Horaney Street when Albert Horaney — son of Harry Horaney — died in 1996.
