A skunk found in Smith County tested positive for rabies during the weekend.

Smith County Animal Control and Shelter employees are encouraging pet owners to be sure their pets’ vaccines are current after the Thursday discovery of the skunk in the 3000 block of CR 313 East.

Animal Control and Shelter Supervisor Amber Greene said the skunk tested positive Saturday and that Smith County Animal Control officers are alerting residents in the area by handing out letters.

“If you see any wildlife acting in complete opposite than their normal self, please contact us,” the letter states. “If your pets attack a sick wildlife or come in some kind of contact with wildlife, please contact us.”
